Segesterone is a plant-derived secondary metabolite. It is a steroidal lactone that is structurally related to the progesterone molecule. Segesterone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and may also have antifungal and anticancer effects. The compound was first isolated from the plant Selaginella tamariscina in the late 1960s. Segesterone has been synthesized through chemical modifications of progesterone, which are known as derivatives.
