5,6,7,2'-Tetrahydroxyflavone (5,6,7-THF) is an isolated natural product that is a flavonoid. It has been shown to have antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1. 5,6,7-THF has also been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α in vitro. 5,6,7-THF binds to the active site of protein kinase C (PKC), which is involved in the inflammatory response. This binding inhibits PKC's ability to phosphorylate its substrates and blocks activation of NF-κB. This inhibition leads to downregulation of IL-1β and TNF-α levels.
