Cis-Desmethyl atenolol is a drug that belongs to the class of β blockers. It has been shown to have antihypertensive properties by decreasing the heart rate and cardiac output. It also decreases the concentration of renin in plasma, which is an enzyme that is released from the kidneys and regulates blood pressure. Cis-Desmethyl atenolol binds to the ryanodine receptor in cardiac cells, thereby inhibiting calcium release and preventing calcium overload. This drug also blocks voltage-dependent sodium channels, which are responsible for propagating action potentials. The effectiveness of cis-Desmethyl atenolol has been shown in two-way crossover studies on rats with hypertension induced by losartan group.
