It is a ligand that binds to the beta subunit of voltage-gated potassium channels and blocks the opening of these channels. The binding site for 1-(3-Beta-azido-2,3-dideoxy-beta-D-threopentafuranosyl)thymine has been identified as being located in the selectivity filter region at the extracellular side of the channel. This compound has shown to be a potent inhibitor of ion channels with IC50s in the low nanomolar range.
