D-Glucosyl-β-1,1'-N-palmitoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine is a fatty acid that has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. It was synthesized from D-glucose and palmitoyl chloride by the addition of an acyl chain to the glucose moiety. The chemical structure of this compound is similar to glucosylceramide, a major constituent of lipid rafts in the alveolar epithelial cell membrane. This molecule can also induce phase transition temperature and lipid flipping in phospholipid membranes, which may be related to its insulin sensitizing effects.
