3-(2,4,6-Trimethylphenylsulfonyl)-1,2,4-triazole is a synthetic antibiotic that has been shown to be effective against bacteria and fungi. The compound binds to the beta subunit of RNA polymerase in the bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis. 3-(2,4,6-Trimethylphenylsulfonyl)-1,2,4-triazole was found to have broad spectrum activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. It also has antiviral properties by inhibiting the viral enzyme RNA polymerase. 3-(2,4,6-Trimethylphenylsulfonyl)-1,2,4-triazole has been shown to have antifungal effects as well by inhibiting fungal cell growth through protein synthesis inhibition.
