TAS-103 is a small molecule that inhibits the polymerase chain reaction and is currently being researched for use in cancer therapy. TAS-103 selectively binds to the cellular target and inhibits DNA synthesis, leading to the death of cancer cells. TAS-103 has been shown to be effective against leukemia cells and tumor xenografts with hypochromic nuclei. TAS-103 does not affect normal cells or healthy tissues because it does not penetrate well into these cells, as they have a higher level of protection. The mechanism by which TAS-103 kills cancer cells is similar to that of etoposide, which inhibits oxidative DNA synthesis and causes mitochondrial membrane potential to collapse.
