MMAF is a non-protein amino acid that can be used to identify specific sites on the antibody where modifications are made. It is used in the lab to modify antibodies for use as immunoconjugates, which can be used to target cancer cells. MMAF sodium has two cysteines, which are linked by a disulfide bond that is susceptible to reduction. This property makes it possible to determine the site of modification because only one cysteine is reduced and not both. The reducing agent can be any substance that contains sulfur such as dithiothreitol or mercaptoethanol.
MMAF sodium is a chain-terminating nucleotide analog, meaning it prevents DNA polymerase from adding another nucleotide during replication or transcription. This leads to termination of the growing chain and prevents synthesis of DNA or RNA molecules with incorrect sequences.
