It can be synthesized by the reaction of boron trifluoride etherate with aldehydes, which leads to the formation of coupling products. The use of this reagent in organic chemistry has been shown to be optimal in reactions that require intermediates and exclude other solvents. 4-[(E)-2-Nitroethenyl]morpholine is an intermediate in the synthesis of (±)pyrrolidin-3-one, which can be used as an analgesic drug or for the treatment of chronic pain.
