It is a prodrug that undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis to bisoprolol in the liver. Bisoprolol hemifumarate has been shown to be effective as an adjunctive therapy for patients with bowel disease and cardiac effects such as lowering blood pressure levels. This drug also has a positive effect on the heart by increasing the levels of natriuretic peptides and decreasing the level of atrial fibrillation (AF). Bisoprolol hemifumarate can be detected in human serum or plasma samples through an analytical method involving liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), which can then be analyzed by multivariate logistic regression to control for confounding factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, alcohol intake, and smoking status.
