It reacts with hydroxyl groups to form stable complexes, which are soluble in organic solvents and can be used as ligands for metal ions. Chlorodiphenylphosphine has been shown to react with copper chloride in aqueous solution at room temperature to form copper chlorodiphenylphosphine, which is soluble in water or ethanol. Several chelate ligands were synthesized using this method, including dimethyl fumarate and halides. The structures of these compounds were analyzed by x-ray diffraction data.
