CAS :<p>Atorvastatin is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. This inhibition reduces the production of cholesterol and other lipids in the liver. Metabolism studies have shown that atorvastatin undergoes extensive presystemic metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes, primarily CYP3A4 and CYP2C9. The drug is converted to inactive metabolites that are eliminated primarily through renal excretion.
