Ethyl 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)acrylate is a reactive amide with antibacterial properties. It undergoes nucleophilic addition to the cap-dependent endonuclease and is able to inhibit bacterial growth. This compound can be synthesized by a simple, efficient method that requires chloroform, deionized water, and 3-mercaptopropionic acid. Ethyl 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)acrylate has an excellent safety profile in vitro and in vivo. It has potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes and Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
