N-[2-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)ethyl]acetamide is a molecule that is structurally similar to the chloride ion. It has been found to be bactericidal in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria at concentrations of 10 μg/mL or less, and it has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by interaction with their DNA. N-[2-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)ethyl]acetamide also has an amide group that interacts with metal ions such as copper, nickel, and cobalt, as well as ligands such as phellodendron amurense. The chemical structure of this molecule allows for absorption spectroscopy studies.
