It has been shown to react with malonic acid, a major component of wastewater, by forming a kinetic and thermodynamic acid complex. The reaction solution then reacts with epidermal growth factor to form benzalkonium chloride. 2-Naphthalenesulfonic acid has been shown to be effective in the treatment of wastewater due to its ability to remove organic materials and inhibit the growth of bacteria.
