CAS :HOBt is a benzotriazole derivative used as an additive in amide coupling chemistry, in combination with mainly carbodiimides as coupling reagents, such as EDCI, DCC and DIC. The role of HOBt is to suppress the epimerisation side-reaction and increase the reaction yield by reacting with the O-acylurea forming an activated OBt ester, which then readily reacts with the amine to generate the amide product. HOBt can be used in synthesis in solid and liquid phase. Since HOBt is catalogued as explosive, especially in its anhydrous form, its transport is restricted and requires to be handled with care.
