It is used in wastewater treatment to remove copper and chlorides. 1,1-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form copper chloride and sodium salts. This reaction occurs because 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane has an acidic hydroxyl group that can be protonated by HCl to form a salt.
