It has been used in biological studies as a model system for lung tissue and to study the effects of nanoparticles on cell function. Nickel oxide undergoes phase transitions at temperatures near 500 degrees Celsius, which can be monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The structure of nickel oxide can be analyzed by x-ray diffraction data collected from samples produced via laser ablation. Nickel oxide has been shown to have high reactivity with hydrogen fluoride and water vapor, making it difficult to synthesize in large quantities.
