1-Benzyl-5-methyloctahydropyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrrole is a ligand that binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It is used in pharmacology and cell biology as a research tool for the study of ion channels, peptides and protein interactions. This ligand has been shown to act as an inhibitor of calcium ion influx into cells through voltage-gated calcium channels. 1-Benzyl-5-methyloctahydropyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrrole also inhibits the release of neurotransmitters from nerve cells by blocking the binding of acetylcholine to its receptors.
