Aib-1 is a selective inhibitor of the ion channels TRPC1 and TRPC4. It has been shown to inhibit ligand-induced activation of these channels in cell lines expressing the respective channel. Aib-1 is a potent activator of the G protein-coupled receptor TGR5, which is also expressed in cells. The ligand for this receptor is unknown. Aib-1 binds to the extracellular domain of its target receptors and inhibits their function by blocking ionic conductance through the channels. Aib-1 also binds to peptides (e.g., anti-beta amyloid) and antibodies (e.g., anti-phosphorylated tau).
