2-Amino-6-(4-methylphenyl)thio-9-(2',3',5'-tri-O-acetyl-b-D-ribofuranosyl)purine is a novel nucleoside phosphoramidite that has antiviral and anticancer activity. This compound is a modified nucleoside that inhibits viral replication by inhibiting the synthesis of viral DNA. 2-Amino-6-(4-methylphenyl)thio-9-(2',3',5'-tri-O-acetylbD ribofuranosyl)purine binds to the catalytic site of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is essential for the production of dNTPs. This chemical also has shown anticancer activity in cell culture against leukemia cells and breast cancer cells, although it was not active against colon cancer cells.
