4-Nitro-1H-indol-5-ol is an oxidized form of 4-nitroindole. It is used as a medicine for the treatment of stomach ulcers and gastritis. This drug can be synthesized from nitric acid, copper, and formaldehyde. The oxidation of this molecule with m-chloroperbenzoic acid yields a carboxyl group, which is then reduced to a hydroxyl group by sodium borohydride. The formation of an anhydride with 4-aminoindole yields the final product.
