CAS :1,3:2,4-Bis(3,4-dimethylobenzylideno) sorbitol (BDMS) is a cross-linking agent that has a phase transition temperature of about 40 °C. It has been used in the clarification of wine and beer and as an additive to food products. BDMS can be used in a variety of industrial processes such as the manufacturing of plastics and elastomers. BDMS is also used as a cross-linking agent in the production of polyurethane foams for insulation applications. BDMS reacts with calcium stearate to form calcium bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitol, which is then reacted with acid to form calcium bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitanate. This reaction mechanism may be due to an acid catalyst that acts on the ester linkage.
