Methyl 2-chloro-5-methyl-1,3-thiazole-4-carboxylate also blocks the uptake of all trans retinal by the retina. This leads to the accumulation of retinol in the eye and prevents its oxidation to form toxic compounds that can lead to retinal cell death.
