5-(5-Chloro-2-methoxybenzenesulfonamido)pyridine-3-carboxamide is a phosphatase inhibitor that binds to the phosphate group of pyrophosphate. It inhibits the enzyme pyrophosphatase, which is involved in the mineralization process. This drug has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of pathological mineralization, such as dental plaque, urinary stones, and kidney stones. 5-(5-Chloro-2-methoxybenzenesulfonamido)pyridine-3-carboxamide also inhibits phosphatases present in extracellular fluids and thereby reduces bone resorption. The drug can be administered orally or intravenously and has been shown to increase bone mineral density in a mouse model of osteoporosis.
