Fullerene molecules are classified as either "spherical" or "ellipsoidal." Fullerene C78 is an example of an ellipsoidal fullerene, which has two hydrocarbon chains attached to the same side of the molecule. This type of fullerene is able to interact with other molecules through the hydroxyl groups, resulting in vibrational and functional theory changes at temperatures from -60°C to 150°C. Fullerenes are also known for their ability to act as a molecular system for irradiation experiments.
