ATMP is prepared in two steps from hexane and acetonitrile. The first step involves protonation of the nitrile group to form an acetamido group followed by condensation with a piperidone ring. The second step involves addition of a chloride ion to form an ester. ATMP can be used as a solvent in preparative methods because it is insoluble in water and has low energy interactions. In addition, this molecule's hydrophobic character allows it to interact with hydrodynamic interactions.
