It has been shown to be transported across the blood-brain barrier by a carrier-mediated transport system and is taken up by neurons via a solute carrier family 38 member 2 transporter. AABME has been observed at physiological levels in maternal blood plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and brain tissue. It has also been studied in vitro using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes as a model for adipogenesis. In this context, it has been shown to increase cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis.
