Hafnium(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate inhibits the reaction between malonic acid and acetic anhydride in an asymmetric synthesis, which results in a mixture of diastereomers. It also suppresses apoptosis by inhibiting the activation of caspase-3, which is one of the primary pathways for apoptosis. The mechanism behind this inhibition is not entirely clear but may be due to the hydroxyl group present on the aromatic hydrocarbon or its acidic nature. Hafnium(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate has anticancer activity and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo with low toxicity.
