It is used as a photolysis reagent for the conversion of primary amines to secondary amines and vice versa in the presence of methyl groups. Its photochemistry has been studied extensively, including its photoinduced reaction with amides to form isomeric amines and its photoinduced reactions with lactams to form isomeric lactams. 3-Azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one reacts with primary amines to form secondary amines, which can be converted back into the original primary amine by heating or by treatment with acid or base.
