    (S)-(+)-Mandelic acid is a crystalline polymorph that belongs to the amide class of chemicals. It is an amphoteric substance, meaning it can act as either an acid or a base depending on the pH of its surroundings. (S)-(+)-Mandelic acid has been shown to inhibit enzyme activity in vitro, with the exception of hydrogen bonding interactions and hydroxyl group reactions. This chemical also inhibits the synthesis of proteins and DNA, which may be due to its ability to react with water molecules in aqueous solution. (S)-(+)-Mandelic acid has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to decrease prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes.
