CAS :Diphenylacetic anhydride is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. It reacts with alkali metals to form the corresponding diphenylacetate salt. Diphenylacetic anhydride has been used as a pharmaceutical preparation for the synthesis of chiral drugs. This compound can be prepared by the addition of chlorine to diphenyl acetate or by the reaction of chloroform and acetophenone. The chlorination method produces a mixture of diastereomers in which one stereoisomer predominates, but both are useful for pharmaceutical preparations. Diphenylacetic anhydride also reacts with amines to form acyl transfer agents and with chloride to form chiral compounds. Irradiation of this anhydride yields a carbonyl group and other products that are useful in pharmaceutical preparations.
