SMS1-IN-1 is a peptide that can activate a type of ion channel called the voltage-gated sodium channel, which plays a key role in the transmission of nerve impulses. SMS1-IN-1 binds to a receptor on the surface of cells and prevents the flow of sodium ions into cells. This leads to an increase in potassium ion concentration outside the cell and an increase in calcium ion concentrations inside the cell, which causes nerve impulses to be transmitted more slowly.
