(+/-)-E-Homocamptothecin

(+/-)-E-Homocamptothecin is a novel anticancer agent that is structurally related to camptothecin, a topoisomerase I inhibitor. It has shown inhibitory properties against human colon carcinoma cells and prostate carcinoma cells. (+/-)-E-Homocamptothecin inhibits the growth of cancer cells by preventing the production of proteins needed for cell division. The drug also has sequence specificity, inhibiting only cancer cells with the appropriate DNA sequences. Clinical development of (+/-)-E-Homocamptothecin has been reinforced by its ability to selectively kill leukemia cells in culture without affecting normal white blood cells.
