It has a carboxyl group at one end and a methyl group at the other, hence its name. 5-Methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid is used in the synthesis of esters that are useful as intermediates in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other chemicals. The asymmetric synthesis of 5-Methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid was accomplished by reacting it with sodium hydroxide in methanol. The compound is also found to have anticarcinogenic properties.
