It is a coenzyme that acts as an intermediate in the conversion of dehydroascorbic acid to erythronate and participates in the synthesis of 4-hydroxycinnamic acid from 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid. L-Threonic acid-1,4-lactone has been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in vitro.
