It is a white solid that is soluble in water. 2-(3-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid is extracted from plant leaves and synthesized by reacting formaldehyde with sodium nitrite. The resulting product can be used to synthesize polyaniline, a polymer that conducts electricity and reacts with ammonium persulphate, forming a red precipitate. This reaction can be tracked using FTIR spectroscopy, which detects the substituents on the polymer chains.
