4-(4-Methylcyclohexyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid is a drug that enhances the effects of insulin on glucose uptake. It is a potent inhibitor of the ATP-sensitive potassium channels in pancreatic β cells, which leads to an increase in intracellular calcium and insulin secretion. 4-(4-Methylcyclohexyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid has been shown to be effective in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus in min6 cells and neonatal mice. This drug also has a potent effect on pancreatic β cells, leading to an increase in cellular proliferation and hormone release. 4-(4-Methylcyclohexyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid acts as an agonist for the l-type calcium channel, leading to increased extracellular calcium levels and an inhibition of potassium efflux from the cell.
