Monensin Sodique est un antibiotique ionophore polyéther principalement utilisé comme additif alimentaire dans le bétail pour améliorer les taux de croissance et l'efficacité alimentaire. Il est produit par la fermentation de la bactérie *Streptomyces cinnamonensis*. Ce composé présente une structure complexe caractérisée par un squelette polyéther cyclique, qui lui permet de transporter des cations monovalents, tels que le sodium et le potassium, à travers les membranes biologiques. Monensin Sodique est connu pour sa capacité à perturber les gradients ioniques, entraînant un métabolisme cellulaire altéré chez certains micro-organismes, ce qui explique son efficacité contre divers protozoaires et bactéries gram-positives. En médecine vétérinaire, il est utilisé pour prévenir la coccidiose chez les volailles et pour améliorer le gain de poids chez les ruminants.
