5-Hydroxymethyl-2’C-methyluridine is a modified nucleoside that is an activator of cellular DNA synthesis. It is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be active against cancer cells in vitro. 5-Hydroxymethyl-2’C-methyluridine has also been used to inhibit the replication of various viruses, including herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, and human immunodeficiency virus type 1. This drug was shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials for the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients with no adverse side effects.
