The reaction mechanism for this reaction is nucleophilic substitution at the carbonyl carbon. 4-Pyrrolidinopyridine has been shown to react with acidic substances to form salts and esters. This compound has also been shown to be a potent thrombin receptor ligand, meaning that it binds to the thrombin receptor and activates it, which leads to increased blood clotting. 4-Pyrrolidinopyridine is used in analytical chemistry for the preparation of amines. It can also be used as a sample preparation agent for chromatography or mass spectrometry analyses due to its ability to remove fatty acids from samples.
