5-Hydroxy-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-2-one (HBD) is a cleavage product of serotonin. It has been shown to have peroxide and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities and the ability to act as an inflammatory cell chemoattractant. HBD has also been shown to inhibit cholinesterase activity in vitro and in animal models, which is involved in the regulation of neurotransmission. HBD may be used as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease due to its association with oxidative DNA damage.
