Ghrelin is a peptide hormone that is produced by the stomach and plays an important role in regulating appetite. Ghrelin stimulates hunger by activating the ghrelin receptor, which is found on cells throughout the body. The ghrelin receptor has been shown to be a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR), which has seven transmembrane domains with intracellular loops that form a ligand binding pocket. Ghrelin binds to its receptor, leading to activation of the G protein and subsequent opening of ion channels. This leads to depolarization of the cell membrane, which creates an action potential that ultimately triggers neurotransmitter release from the neuron.
