It has also been used as an analytical method to measure the concentration of phosphorus pentachloride in environmental samples and to determine oxygen transport properties. Perfluorotetradecane can be synthesized from perfluorinated alkylthio compounds and oxygenated hydroxy groups. The compound has a hydroxyl group at the end of its carbon chain that may be esterified to form a fatty acid or polymerized to form a fatty acid ester.
