BTSA1 is a cytosolic protein that is expressed at low levels in normal cells, but can be induced to high levels in leukemic cells. BTSA1 has been shown to act as an effector protein by binding to mitochondrial superoxide and inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential. It also inhibits the activation of caspase-9 and apoptosis pathway, which leads to apoptosis. BTSA1 has been shown to have anti-leukemic activity and may be a potential therapeutic target for cancer.
