It has been shown to induce apoptosis by decreasing the mitochondrial membrane potential and pro-apoptotic proteins. 4EGI-1 also has an antiproliferative effect on muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to decrease cell proliferation and inhibit cellular transformation in tissue culture.
