Flunisolide is a corticosteroid that relieves the symptoms of allergy, such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. It also reduces levels of cortisol in the blood and may be used to treat asthma. Flunisolide is rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa and has been shown effective in vitro at inhibiting allergic reactions. Clinical trials have demonstrated long-term efficacy with flunisolide in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma. Flunisolide has been shown to inhibit eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) synthesis and reduce airway hyperresponsiveness in asthmatic subjects. The chemical stability of flunisolide has been tested by exposing it to human serum for up to 24 hours at 37°C with no loss of activity. In addition, flunisolide does not cause skin irritation or local erythema on repeated topical applications to humans or animals. A two-way crossover study
