This compound also can react with other sulfhydryl groups or thiols in the bacterial cell wall, such as mercaptans, cysteines, or glutathione. The reaction between 1-mercaptoadamantane and glutathione leads to hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid and formation of glutathione disulfide (GSSH), which inhibits bacterial growth.
