1-Benzyl-1H,2H-cyclohepta[D]imidazol-2-one is a hydrophobic, insoluble compound that can be reconstituted and implanted in the body. It is used for diagnostic purposes as a bioactive agent and can be injected or administered through iontophoresis. The drug targets specific cells by binding to proteins on the cell surface and is active against cancer cells and bacteria. 1-Benzyl-1H,2H-cyclohepta[D]imidazol-2-one has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in monolayers of cultured human erythrocytes at high concentrations (i.e., 10 mM). The drug inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase, preventing transcription and replication; it also inhibits DNA topoisomerase IV, which maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA.
