1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid ammonium is a gadolinium complex of a phase transition temperature. It is used as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electron microscopy to enhance the visibility of different tissues or cells. The gadolinium ion can be bound to lipids and proteins within the cell, and it has been shown that this binding alters the lipid bilayer's birefringence. This contrast agent has been proposed for use in clinical settings in order to make tissue structures more visible during MRI examinations.
